Covid vaccine: How much will you have to pay? SII CEO reveals at #HTLS2020
Adar Poonawalla, CEO and owner of Serum Institute of India, the largest vaccine manufacturer in the world, revealed how much a Covid vaccine dose is likely to cost.
He was speaking to Sanchita Sharma, health editor, Hindustan Times, on Day 1 of the 18th edition of the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit.
Poonawalla said that one dose of the vaccine is likely to cost $5-6 with a maximum retail price (MRP) of Rs 1,000.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Covid-19 vaccination was being done for free at government hospitals. PM Modi was addressing Janaushadhi Diwas celebrations via video conferencing. “We are proud of our scientists for we now have ‘Made in India’ vaccine for us and the rest of the world. Covid-19 vaccination is being done for free at government hospitals in India. Covid-19 vaccine costs Rs 250 in private hospitals which is the cheapest in world. Even I got my first dose of Covid-19.” PM Modi added, “1.5 lakh health and wellness centre are being made in villages out of which 50,000 have already started functioning. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 7500th Janaushadhi Kendra at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong. The event took place via video conferencing on March 07. While addressing the event, PM Modi said, "Today, we have 'Made in India' vaccines for our country and for the world. COVID-19 vaccination is being done for free at government hospitals and at the cost of Rs 250 at private hospitals. I have also taken the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine."
As per the data released by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), India on March 07 reported single-day spike of 18,711 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours. 100 deaths in the same period pushed the COVID-19 toll in the country to 1,57,756. India's confirmed cases of coronavirus stand at 1,12,10,799 which include 1,84,523 active infections. More than 1,08,68,520 people have recovered from the virus with 14,392 new discharges in last 24 hours. Till date the total vaccination is 2,09,22,344. According to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 7,37,830 samples were tested on March 06. Cumulative samples tested for COVID-19 till March 06 are 22,14,30,507.

India provided COVID-19 vaccines to Saint Lucia on March 01. 'Made in India' vaccines was received by the Prime Minister Allen Chastanet of Saint Lucia. India provided 25,000 doses of coronavirus vaccine to the island nation Saint Lucia. The consignment of coronavirus vaccine reached under India's 'Vaccine Maitri' initiative. The 40,000 doses of 'Made in India' coronavirus vaccines also arrived in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. It was received by Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves on March 01. They received Serum Institute of India (SII)'s Covishield doses today. Earlier, India supplied COVID-19 vaccines to neighbouring countries Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh under the 'Neighbourhood First' policy.
Phase 2 of India's Covid-19 vaccination drive was launched in high-profile manner on March 1 with Prime Minister Narendra Modi becoming one of the first beneficiaries. The second phase of the programme involves inoculation of those aged 60 and above, and those aged 45+ with comorbidities. The process for registration involves entry of mobile number and identity card details on the government's dedicated Co-win platform. The Serum Institute of India is the world’s biggest manufacturer of vaccines. CEO Adar Poonawalla blames a lack of standardized information for delays in vaccine distribution.
Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO Adar Poonawalla on January 22 informed that there is no impact of fire on the production of 'Covishield' vaccine. "The extent of the damage is more than 1,000 crores. The supply of COVID-19 will not be affected due to the fire (at Serum Institute of India facility). No actual vaccine was being made at that facility. The fire has no impact on the production of 'Covishield' vaccine and no damage has occurred to the existing stock either," said Adar Poonawalla. A major fire had occurred at Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) on January 21 that claimed 5 lives also.

Working women in India were among the worst affected by the Covid pandemic, according to a report titled ‘Women @ Work’, published by Aspire For Her in partnership with Sustainable Advancements. A report by a US firm has claimed that Chinese hackers were behind the Mumbai power outage in October 2020. The first high dam on the Yamuna is scheduled to come up at Lakhwar in Dehradun and Tehri in Uttarakhand after the Union environment ministry’s expert appraisal committee recommended the 300MW Lakhwar Multipurpose Project for environmental clearance in its December 2 meeting last year. Residents of Lohari village along the Yamuna are both happy and anxious about the project. The Lakhwar Project is contentious as it will impact a large forest area.
