After nearly a decade of unlawful imprisonment by the Pakistan government, political activist Baba Jan has finally been released. Baba Jan's arrest had sparked a global controversy, with protests in Gilgit-Baltistan for his immediate release as recent as September this year. Baba Jan who was serving life imprisonment in Damas jail in district Ghizer was released after 9 years. Baba Jan is a political activist from Hunza and a member of Awami Workers Party. Baba Jan was serving life imprisonment along with others after being convicted by an anti-terrorism court over the mass demonstration against the government's silence in the Attabad incident that left thousands homeless. The massive landslide blocked the Hunza River and submerged several villages in January 2010.
Protest erupted in Pakistan -occupied Gilgit-Baltistan over ‘rigged’ assembly elections. People protested against Prime Minister Imran Khan-led Pakistan govt. Protesters burnt tyres and blocked roads to show their anger and frustration. The opposition accused the government of blatant misuse of power. Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf won a majority of the 23 assembly seats. Hundreds of people have joined the demonstrations following a protest call made by their political parties. Massive protests have broken out in Gilgit-Baltistan region against Imran Khan’s party PTI over alleged rigging of polls. Major opposition parties including the Pakistan People’s Party led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and & the PML-N of former PM Nawaz Sharif have been protesting against the government over the issue. Elections in the area were held amid relentless protests by people of the area over the illegal occupation of the region by Pakistan. As results go in favour of Prime Minister Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Gilgit-Baltistan, other political parties hit the streets claiming Assembly polls were rigged. The elections were held on 23 seats of the Legislative Assembly on Nov 15. PTI emerged as the leading party after it bagged nine Legislative Assembly seats. Several political parties accused PTI of rigging the elections and threaten to continue protests. The elections were held amidst relentless protest by people of Gilgit-Baltistan against Pakistan government's 'illegal occupation' in the region.

India slammed Pakistan over its accusations that New Delhi was spreading disinformation. Responding to questions on Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan quoting an EU disinformation lab report to accuse India of subversive activities through fake media organisations, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said that as a responsible democracy, India does not practice disinformation campaigns. "In fact, if you are looking at disinformation, the best example is the country next door which is circulating fictional and fabricated dossiers and purveys a regular stream of fake news," he said. Ceasefire violation was initiated by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district on January 16. Regular shelling has been a major problem for the locals. People living in the Balakot sector urged government to not concentrate on elections instead on the people living here. One of the locals said, "The Central government has given the full emphasis on elections, but elections will not resolve people's problems. People want roads, bunkers, they are disturbed due to the regular shelling activities. The emphasis should not be on elections instead authorities should think about the people living here."
Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane lashed out at Pakistan over its continued support to terrorists. Speaking at the Army Day celebration, the Army Chief said that Indian forces have been giving a stern response to provocations at the border and added that around 300 to 400 terrorists are waiting across the border to infiltrate into India. He also added that forces have thwarted numerous infiltration attempts by terrorists into Kashmir. The Army Chief also added that there has been a 44% rise in ceasefire violations by Pakistan. During the Army Day celebrations on January 15, Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane told that over 200 terrorists near LoC and in counter-terrorism operations in last year. "Around 300-400 terrorists are sitting in training camps near the border to infiltrate into the Indian territory. Number of ceasefire violations went up by 44 per cent last year, which shows the nefarious intentions of Pakistan. Last year, the Army eliminated over 200 terrorists near LoC and in counter-terrorism operations," said General MM Naravane.
