Snow clearance operation is underway in Srinagar. The roads here have been covered with thick layer of snow. Normal life has been disturbed due to extreme weather conditions. Heavy machinery is being used to speed up the clearance operation. Lately, higher ranges have been witnessing heavy snowfall.
With heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of the Pirpanjal mountain range, normal life in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district was thrown out of gear. The roads in Rajouri district have been blocked due to snow. Snow-clearing operation is underway. Several roads in upper Shimla and Manali were blocked due to heavy snowfall. Kufri in Shimla district witnessed 30 cm of snowfall, followed by 32 cm in Dalhousie of Chamba district, 14 cm in Manali of Kullu district and nine cm in Shimla city. Shimla received fresh snow cover on Monday morning leaving the entire town in a white blanket of snow. The tourists who arrived earlier were seen enjoying the snowfall. The higher reaches of Pir Panjal mountain range received heavy snowfall. The roads in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district are blocked due to snow. Rajouri's higher reaches witnessed snowfall on December 28. Speaking to ANI, a police official said, "Pir Panjal received heavy snowfall today (December 28) morning resulting in road blocks."
Jammu and Kashmir's Ganouri-Tanta village saw the light of an electric bulb for the first time on January 18, ending the decades of darkness from the lives of the villagers. Village is located in the far-flung area of Doda district. The electrification work of the village was taken up on the order of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, after a group of locals put forward the demand before him at the last "LG Mulaqaat" programme. LG asked the Doda district administration to ensure the electrification of the village within a month. To celebrate the historical moment with the villagers, District Development Council Dr Sagar D Doifode visited the village and formally declared it as electrified by lighting up a bulb amid huge rounds of applause by elated locals. DDC ensured that the progress of electrification work was monitored on a daily basis, while providing every logistic support to the JPDCL team associated with the task.
In a bid to boost winter sports in the Kashmir region, the Snowshoe Federation of India organized a snowshoe run cum interaction programme in Srinagar for the first time amid the heavy snowfall season. Athletes from different parts of Kashmir took part in this run recently, which is played in high snowfall regions like Europe. Participants thanked the Snowshoe Federation of India for organizing the snow-run event.
The Border Security Force (BSF) organised a free medical camp in J-K's Rajouri on January 15. It was held under the 'Civic Action Programme' in Dhangri block. The camp provides free treatment and medicines to under-privileged families who cannot afford treatment. It was organised by 59th Battalion of BSF.
The constructions of bridges in far-flung hilly areas are underway for the better connectivity in JandK's Rajouri. The bridges are being built under the RandB Division of Rajouri. Locals were facing hardship due to lack of connectivity. Hundreds of far-flung hilly areas are now connected with roads and highways of Rajouri district.
Two terrorists were killed on Sunday during a gunfight with security forces in the higher reaches of Surankote in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district. The terrorists are believed to have infiltrated into this side from across the Line of Control (LoC) about three days ago and were heading for south Kashmir's Shopian district when they were intercepted in a snow-bound area along the Mughal Road in the afternoon, the officials said. The officials said police, assisted by the Army, launched a joint cordon and search operation in remote Chattapani-Dugran village after getting information about the presence of three suspected terrorists. Mortal remains of Havildar Anil Kumar Tomar were brought to his native place in Meerut on night of December 29. Tomar was injured during a cordon and search operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian on December 25, and later succumbed to injuries. Last rites of Tomar were performed with full military honour.
JandK National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on December 26 alleged that after results of DDC polls, government tried to 'forcefully'make their candidate join Apni Party who won from Shopian. Omar Abdullah said, "Referring to DDC polls, the PM today said that democracy has won but the government has started to harass those who fought the election in Shopian. Two senior leaders of the National Conference were detained after the declaration of the DDC poll results. They are being put under preventive detention for no reason. One lady of our party who won in the election in Shopian was forced to join Apni Party. We have a phone recording to prove it."
Two terrorists were neutralised in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district during an encounter with security forces on December 26. JandK police's DGP Dilbagh Singh said, "Last night, we started an operation in Shopian on specific inputs. Two Army Jawans were injured last night and were hospitalised. Both terrorists have been neutralised today. They belong to Al-Badr. Operation still underway. No casualty from our side."
Personnel of the Indian Army carried out a controlled explosion in Jammu and Kashmir on January 10. An improvised explosive device (IED) was neutralised by the Army's bomb squad in the Mendhar area of Poonch. Meanwhile, in Pampore, security forces uncovered an alleged terror hideout in a house's cowshed.
