On Tuesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the state is preparing for its “most intense” COVID-19 surge to date.

5,000 more body bags have been distributed to San Diego, Los Angeles and Inyo counties.

60 53-foot refrigerated trucks have been requested to remain on standby for counties and hospitals.

In addition, California is activating its mass fatality program and coroner mutual aid, which will coordinate coroner and morgue responses.

On Tuesday, California reported 34,216 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the state’s total up to at least 1,655,000 cases.

An anticipated 12 percent of those new cases will wind up hospitalized, with 12 percent of those hospitalized requiring admittance into the ICU.

That means that the amount of reported COVID-19 cases in one day may produce 3,900 hospitalizations and nearly 500 ICU patients.

As of Dec.

14, California’s seven-day average of new COVID-19 deaths reported is 163 per day, bringing the state’s total to 21,483
