Hoover Dam's Lake Mead at historic low water level
Lake Mead, the reservoir in Nevada created by Hoover Dam, has sunk to its lowest level ever, underscoring the gravity of the extreme drought across the U.S. West.
{Hoover Dam reservoir: Explained} The Hoover Dam reservoir is an engineering marvel that symbolized the American ascendance of the 20th century.
It was formed in the 1930s from the damming of the Colorado River at the Nevada-Arizona border.
As of June 9th, the lake surface has fallen to just over 1,000 feet (on screen 1,071 feet) above sea level dipping below the previous record low in July 2016.
It has fallen 140 feet since 2000 - that's nearly the height of the Statue of Liberty from torch to base, exposing a bathtub ring of bleached-white embankments.
Bruce Nelson is the director of operations of Las Vegas Boat Harbor and Lake Mead Marina.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) BRUCE NELSON, DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS LAS VEGAS BOAT HARBOR AND LAKE MEAD MARINA, SAYING:"Here at Lake Mead, we're experiencing obviously low, low water levels that we haven't experienced since the dam was built.
It's been this level before but it's when the water was rising.
We've been close to this level last like five or six years ago, but we're going to a new historic low." The drought that has brought Lake Mead low has gripped the U.S. West.
Farmers are abandoning crops, Nevada has introduced lawn watering restrictions in the Las Vegas area, and the governor of Utah is literally asking people to pray for rain.
Firefighters are facing worsening conditions this summer, after nearly 10,000 fires in California alone during the last wildfire season burned 4.2 million acres of land.
The Bureau of Reclamation, which manages water resources in the Western states, is likely to declare Lake Mead's most extreme shortage condition for the first time ever.
That would cut water supplies to Arizona, Nevada and Mexico, says the Bureau of Reclamation spokesperson Patti Aaron.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) PATTI AARON, SPOKESPERSON THE BUREAU OF RECLAMATION LOWER COLORADO REGION, SAYING:"Lake Mead and Hoover Dam serve about twenty-five million people in the lower basin.
We have a decrease of about twenty five percent of our capacity in producing power because of the lower lake levels." While droughts are a recurring natural hazard, they've been made worse recently by an accumulation of extremely dry years for most of this century.
Scientists say human-influenced climate change has exacerbated the situation.
Incoming Storm , Could Boost Water Level , Recovery at Lake Mead.
'Newsweek' reports that a Pacific storm is
expected to bring "widespread precipitation"
to a large portion of the United States.

The deluge of rain is also expected to benefit
water levels at Lake Mead, which are already
26 feet higher than the same time in 2023.
Following years of drought, Lake Mead hit
alarmingly low levels in the summer of 2022. .
Above-average precipitation during
the winter helped water levels at
the reservoir begin to recover in 2023.
National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologist
Chris Outler told 'Newsweek' that any
rain-producing storm system in the
Colorado River basin will benefit Lake Mead. .
The lake will definitely be getting
some of the rain, and so will the
basins that drain into the lake.
We'll take anything we can get, Chris Outler, National Weather Service
(NWS) meteorologist, via 'Newsweek'.
'Newsweek' reports that a majority of Lake Mead's
recovery can be attributed to snow melt that
feeds into the Colorado River every spring.
At the end of November, water levels
at Lake Mead began increasing again,
after maintaining levels since September. .
As of January 30, Lake Mead has reached
1,072 feet, which represents a four foot
increase since the beginning of the month.

This Day in History: , Pluto Is Discovered.
February 18, 1930.
Once believed to be the ninth planet,
Pluto was discovered at the Lowell Observatory
in Flagstaff, AZ, by astronomer Clyde W. Tombaugh.
Tombaugh discovered the
tiny dwarf planet using a new astronomic technique
of photographic plates combined with a blink microscope.
Pluto was given the Roman name for the
god of the underworld in Greek mythology
due to its surface temperature of -360° F.
Nearly four billion miles away from the sun,
it takes Pluto approximately
248 years to complete one orbit. .
Pluto's only known moon, Charon,
has a diameter of a mere 737 miles.
In 2006, it was announced that Pluto would
no longer be considered a planet because its
orbit crosses into the orbit of planet Neptune.
While widely referred to as a dwarf planet, many argue that it should still be considered a planet.

Lithium Extraction Project , Worries Those Who Rely on , Water From Colorado River.
Lithium is used to manufacture
electric vehicle batteries.
A new plan to extract lithium in Utah has
raised concerns about how the project could
impact the Colorado River, Fox News reports.
The Paradox Basin, a geologic formation shared by Utah,
Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, has been analyzed
by an Australian company and its U.S. subsidiaries.
The Paradox Basin, a geologic formation shared by Utah,
Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, has been analyzed
by an Australian company and its U.S. subsidiaries.
The basin's groundwater has been found
to be rich in lithium salts and other minerals
left over from millions of years ago when
the area was repeatedly flooded and drained.
Australia-based Anson Resources has also
reportedly acquired rights to freshwater
sourced from the nearby Green River. .
The company's plans have given rise
to questions about how the groundwater
and river water are interconnected, in addition
to the impact of lithium on the environment.
'The Guardian' points out that the Green River is
a tributary of the crucial Colorado River, which
supplies water for 40 million people in the West.
We need to have a renewable+ energy
transition, but maybe we shouldn’t be
looking for these kinds of quick-fix energy
solutions on a drought-stricken river, Lauren Wood, a third-generation resident
of Green River, Utah, via Fox News.
Geologists and Earth scientists have cautioned
that it remains unclear how water-intensive the
process of direct lithium extraction actually is.
The technology is too new
for much of a commercial track
record to have been established, Michael McKibben, professor at the University
of California, Riverside, via Fox News.
Ultimately, Utah's water rights division will
make the final decision regarding water
permits for Anson and its U.S. subsidiaries,
a process which could take months or years

Winter Storm Brings , California Reservoir , to Full Capacity.
'Newsweek' reports that California's
Cachuma Lake reached full capacity following
a winter storm over the past weekend.
In the summer of 2022, several California
reservoirs reached alarmingly low water
levels amid a long-running drought.
At the time, water levels at
Cachuma Lake fell to 692 feet. .
On March 3 of this year, water levels
at Cachuma Lake reached 753.1 feet,
just above its capacity of 753 feet.
While other reservoirs in California are higher
than their historical averages, none besides Cachuma Lake have reached capacity this year, according to
the California Department of Water Resources.
Cachuma Lake has reached
136% of its historical average.
As a result, water levels in California have significantly
improved, with officials even voluntarily releasing
water from several reservoirs ahead of expected rain.
So far in 2024, a number of California
cities have exceeded their annual average
rainfall, including Los Angeles and San Diego.
According to AccuWeather,
California is predicted to be
drought-free until at least 2025.
