US Reopens Border to UK Visitors After Almost Two Years
Thousands of travellers are jetting off for long-awaited reunions with family and friends as the United States reopened its borders to UK visitors.
Rival airlines British Airways and Virgin Atlantic staged a synchronised departure from Heathrow Airport to celebrate the end of the travel ban, almost two years after it was introduced.
Almost four million British nationals travelled to the US every year prior to the pandemic, according to figures from the Foreign Office.
The lifting of the travel ban is crucial for the UK’s travel industry, which has been hit hard by the health crisis.

At Heathrow Airport, a V-irgin Atlantic Boeing 787-9 and a stationary British Airways aircraft collided on the runway while the former was being towed. Thankfully, no passengers were aboard the V-irgin Atlantic plane at the time of the incident. Both aircraft are now undergoing maintenance checks to evaluate the damage. Despite the collision, airport operations remain uninterrupted, and investigations are underway to ensure passenger and crew safety. Eyewitnesses and social media footage have underscored the prompt response of emergency services.

An ex-prisoner has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order for killing an elderly mobility scooter rider. Lee Byer, 45, was psychotic when he stabbed 87-year-old Thomas O’Halloran in Greenford, west London, in August 2022. Mr O’Halloran, originally from County Clare, was well-known in the Greenford community. Byer, who had had a string of convictions, was released from Wormwood Scrubs five days before the killing.
