NHS hits record cancer referrals, but still delays in system
The UK is seeing a record number of people being referred for cancer treatment, after a sharp decline during the pandemic.
NHS England says the number of referrals has hit 2.7 million.
But, as Director of Advocacy at MacMillan Cancer Support Eve Byrne points out, February saw the lowest number of people actually starting that treatment in over half a year, delays which leave patients like Louise McAllan feeling like "shells".

Rishi Sunak has defended backlash from the latest NHS figures which show waiting lists have risen by 330,000 since he promised to cut them, insisting that the government's plan is working. "Whilst we haven't made as much progress as I would have liked, today's figures show we are making headway towards that goal. Over the last five months, there has been a reduction of around 200,000 in the overall waiting list which is positive and if it wasn't for industrial action, an extra 430,000 patients would have been treated," he added. Labour's Rachel Reeves has said voting to bring down the SNP government and forcing an election in Scotland is the right thing to do for the people of Scotland. “We will back the motion of no-confidence in Humza Yousaf, but we've gone further and tabled a motion of no confidence in the whole Scottish government and if Anas Sarwar and Scottish Labour are successful with that amendment the government will fall and there will be fresh elections," the shadow chancellor said. It comes as Humza Yousaf is facing confidence votes in himself and his government following his decision to sack the Greens from government.
"The chaos and division at the heart of the SNP Is having a real impact on public services and the lives and communities across Scotland and we now have two broken governments - The SNP in Scotland and the Conservatives in Westminster. It is time for fresh elections in Scotland and across the UK," Ms Reeves added.

Shadow Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds described a government minister's appearance on Question Time as "incredibly embarrassing" after he appeared to ask if Rwanda and Congo were different countries. When discussing the government policy of deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda, policing minister Chris Philp responded to an audience member’s question during the BBC One programme by asking: “Rwanda is a different country of Congo, isn’t it?”
Mr Reynolds said the Rwanda scheme has caused "significant damage to the reputation of the UK around the world." The government's Rwanda bill, which was passed in parliament last week, says any asylum seeker entering the UK "illegally" after 1 January 2022, from a safe country such as France, could be sent to Rwanda.

The father of one of the Reading terror attack victims said the families are trusting the judge to make recommendations at the inquest conclusion that will “prevent other families from facing the pain, heartbreak and loss that we must live with every day”. Speaking outside of the Old Bailey on Friday morning, Gary Furlong, the father of James, said: “It is now almost four years since our boys, James, Joseph and David were taken from us in the murderous terror attack by Khairi Saadallah in Forbury Gardens. We waited patiently while the criminal trial and appeal by Saadallah ran their course. We have listened to six weeks of evidence at the inquest into our boys’ death." Report by Kennedyl. The world's first personalised mRNA cancer jab for melanoma is being tested on British patients. Steve Young, 52, from Stevenage, joined a clinical trial after being diagnosed with the potentially deadly form of skin cancer. Dr Heather Shaw, an investigator for the trial, said the jab had the potential to cure people with melanoma and is being tested in other cancers.
“This is one of the most exciting things we’ve seen in a really long time," she said.
