The U.S. Secret Service previously established the National Threat Assessment Center to monitor trends that could threaten the nation.

On January 25, the Secret Service published a report detailing trends in mass attacks aimed at helping to prevent future tragedies.

NBC reports that the 60-page report found that the single most common motive for mass attacks was a personal grievance of some sort.

Meanwhile, 25% of the attackers studied were found to be motivated by hateful ideologies or conspiracy theories.

NBC reports that the study details 173 attacks that injured three or more people in public spaces between 2016 and 2020.

According to Lina Alathari, the chief of the Secret Service’s National Threat Assessment Center, the trends in the report could help leaders identify future threats.

Over 75% of all attacks involved firearms, and of those attacks, 80% resulted in at least one death.

In more than 25% of all the mass shootings, attackers had obtained the firearms used in the attack illegally.

Attackers armed with weapons other than guns fatally wounded victims in less than 50% of attacks detailed by the report.
