Why Women's History Month Is in March.

In honor of the start of Women’s History Month, here’s a look back at its origins.

The United States, United Kingdom and Australia all celebrate women during the month of March.

The reason for this is a single day: International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8.

The United Nations officially recognized the day in 1977, though it had been observed since 1911.

Local groups and municipalities also began celebrating National Women’s Week in the 1970s.

After gaining enough traction, the first official National Women’s Week was declared by President Jimmy Carter beginning on March 8, 1980.

According to the National Women’s History alliance, states began declaring the entire month Women’s History Month before a national push came in 1986.

Congress declared the first official Women’s History Month in March 1987

The strike was repeated on the same date in 1908 and throughout the year, which led to March 8 being named International Women’s Day. In 1978, activist Molly Murphy MacGregor instituted a local “women's history week” in Sonoma, California. It was recognized nationally on a year-to-year basis in 1980 by President Jimmy Carter. By 1986, 14 states recognized March as Women’s History Month, as a result of the hard work of The National Women's History Project. A year later, in 1987, the entire nation began celebrating National Women's Day in March

AP reports that Palestine's broad support reflects the growing international concern for Palestinians facing a humanitarian crisis amid the ongoing war in Gaza. The resolution would have made Palestine the 194th member of the United Nations. . Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood stressed to the Security Council that the U.S. veto of the resolution... . ... “does not reflect opposition to Palestinian statehood but instead is an acknowledgment that it will only come from direct negotiations between the parties.”. Similarly, deputy State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said that the U.S. has... ... “been very clear consistently that premature actions in New York — even with the best intentions — will not achieve statehood for the Palestinian people.”. In response to the failed vote, Palestinian U.N. Ambassador Riyad Mansour told the council that the decision would not deter the Palestinian people.
