Mayon Volcano: Philippines raises alert level to 3 as fear of eruption magnifies | Oneindia News

Authorities in the Philippines have begun evacuating around 10,000 people living near the Mayon Volcano after volcanic earthquakes and hundreds of rockfall events were detected.

Mount Mayon is situated in the eastern province of Albay, some 330 kilometers south of the Filipino capital of Manila.

The Manila-based Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that there is an "increased tendency towards a hazardous eruption" after the collapse of the summit dome.

The collapse has generated an increasing number and volume of rockfall events.

The officials have also raised the alert level for the region to Level 3 for Mayon volcano…one of the country’s most active volcanoes, after superheated streams of gas, debris and rocks cascaded down its upper slopein a condition they fear could lead to a hazardous eruption within days.

The 2,463-metre volcano“is exhibiting magmatic eruption”, the state volcanology agency said.

Mayon, a near-perfect cone, is considered one of the most volatile of the country's 24 active volcanoes.

Japan, Philippines, US rebuke China over ‘dangerous’ South China Sea moves | Oneindia

The heads of state from Japan, the Philippines, and the United States have jointly expressed "grave concern" regarding China's conduct in the contested South China Sea. Over recent years, Beijing has intensified its presence in this crucial maritime region, leading to heightened tensions, notably with the Philippines. This nation, among others in Southeast Asia, asserts territorial claims over portions of the sea adjacent to its shores. In response to a recent altercation near Second Thomas Shoal that resulted in injuries to Filipino soldiers and damage to vessels, President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines declared Manila's intention to enact countermeasures against China. The leaders of Japan, the Philippines, and the United States expressed shared concerns over the People's Republic of China's (PRC) provocative actions in the South China Sea during the inaugural summit held in Washington, DC. This joint statement comes amid escalating tensions in the region. #SouthChinaSea #China #Japan #Philippines #US #Tensions #Diplomacy #InternationalRelations #SecurityConcerns #GeoPolitics ~HT.97~PR.152~ED.102~

The Philippines summoned China's envoy on Monday to protest against "aggressive actions" in the South China Sea at the weekend, as Manila's defence minister dared Beijing to bolster its vast sovereignty claims by taking them to international arbitration. The Philippine foreign ministry has accused China's coastguard of deploying water cannon against a civilian boat supplying troops on Saturday at the Second Thomas Shoal.
