A semi-trailer truck and a bus carrying seniors collided in central Canada's Manitoba province, killing at least 15 people and injuring 10 more.

Most of the seniors aboard the handi-transit vehicle were from Dauphin, Manitoba and the surrounding areas.

The bus was headed south on Highway 5 toward a casino near the town of Carberry, while the semitrailer was headed east on Highway 1.

The semitrailer struck the bus at the intersection of the two highways north of Carberry, roughly 170 kilometers west of Winnipeg.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the province of Manitoba said that as of yesterday evening, 15 people had been killed in the crash and 10 others taken to hospitals with injuries.

12 ambulances were rushed to the collision scene, as well as an air ambulance.

Hospitals in the region confirmed they were responding to large numbers of victims and that all facilities were on alert.

Authorities said the highway was closed in both directions and they were asking motorists to avoid the area.

Yesterday’s crash echoes a 2018 tragedy in which 15 people were killed in an accident in the neighboring western province of Saskatchewan when a truck collided with a bus carrying young ice hockey players.
