Meta cracks down on Chinese 'Spamouflage' campaign; Jettisons 7700 accounts spreading disinformation
The technology behemoth Meta has said that it has purged thousands of Facebook accounts that were part of a widespread online Chinese spam operation trying to covertly boost China and criticize the West.
The campaign, which became known as âSpamouflage,â was active across more than 50 platforms and forums including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X, formerly known as Twitter, according to a Meta threat report.
Meta Global Threat Intelligence Lead Ben Nimmo said that this disinformation campaign, which they cracked down on, is the largest, though unsuccessful, and most prolific covert influence operation that we know of in the world today.
Meta began investigating in 2019 and its research aligned with several research groups, including the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (Aspi), who later coined the term Spamouflage.
The campaign had shifted away from large platforms such as Facebook and Twitter on to the smaller sites after it was initially identified and blocked by the platforms in 2019.

The announcement was made on April 24.
WhatsApp passkey support on iPhones
comes months after Meta's encrypted messaging app made the feature available
to Android users, The Verge reports. .
Passkeys are meant to replace passwords because they are more secure and convenient.
They also enable you to sign in when disconnected from a network.
To enable passkeys for WhatsApp on
iOS, open settings, then go to accounts,
which is where you'll find the option.
However, rollouts can take time, so keep checking if you don't see passkeys right away.
WhatsApp spokesperson Zade Alsawah
said more people should see the option
"in the coming weeks.".
Alsawah also said that a QR code from
"Linked Devices" will still need to be scanned to log into the platform on other devices.

be primary devices for an account.â
