A catastrophic flash flood has torn through Central Texas, leaving a trail of devastation and a rising death toll of at least 79 people, with dozens still unaccounted for. The disaster struck with shocking speed before dawn, as the Guadalupe River surged an unprecedented 26 feet in just 45 minutes. This terrifying wall of water swept away homes, vehicles, and summer camps, giving residents and campers mere minutes to react. The event has turned serene landscapes into disaster zones, prompting a massive search and rescue operation.
Kerr County has been hit the hardest, reporting 59 fatalities, a number that tragically includes 21 children who were camping near the river. Among the missing are eleven children and a counselor from Camp Mystic, a detail that has left the entire community in shock and grief. The tragedy extends to Travis, Burnet, and Kendall counties, where more casualties have been confirmed. Authorities are deploying helicopters, drones, and boats in a desperate search for survivors and victims, with over 850 people already rescued from rooftops, trees, and isolated areas.
As families and volunteers join the desperate search efforts, many are beginning to ask hard questions about the timeliness and adequacy of the flood warnings. With flood watches still in effect and more rain in the forecast, the situation remains critical.
