India is set for a major GST overhaul starting September 22, as Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a new two-tier GST rate structure of 5% and 18%.
From soaps to small cars, several common-use items will see revised prices. Sitharaman said the move is part of a broader āstructural reformā aimed at strengthening the economy while reducing rates on essentials.
The GST Councilās decision was unanimous, with no state opposing the revision. According to the Finance Minister, the changes focus on the main drivers of the economy while making goods of daily use more affordable for ordinary citizens.
