Far-right party looking to make gains in 2 state elections in eastern Germany
Germans are casting their votes on Sunday in Saxony and Thuringia, in the east of the country, in an election that could see the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) become the strongest party for the first time and produce painful results for the unpopular national government.
Germany commemorated the 80th Victory Day with ceremonies honoring the defeat of Nazi Germany in WWII. Despite a ban on Soviet-era songs and symbols due to the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, Russian folk songs echoed through Berlin streets in defiance. The ban sparked criticism from Russia, emphasizing the right to honor Red Army soldiers who played a vital role in defeating Nazism and sacrificing millions of lives during the war.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has launched a scathing attack on French President Emmanuel Macron and German opposition leader Friedrich Merz, accusing them of attempting to revive Europe's imperialist past. Speaking at a diplomatic event, Lavrov warned that Western leaders were reverting to their “former instincts” of conquest and domination, drawing chilling comparisons between today’s political climate and Nazi-era atrocities.
He further stated that “German and Ukrainian Nazis are united by their attitudes toward those they want to enslave,” claiming that just as some “burned Jews,” others now “burn Russians.” Lavrov’s remarks come amid intensifying tensions between Moscow and the West over the war in Ukraine, NATO expansion, and growing European militarization.
The inflammatory comments are expected to draw condemnation from European capitals but are in line with Russia’s narrative of positioning itself as a bulwark against Western hegemony and what it calls modern-day fascism.

Friedrich Merz has secured the chancellorship of Germany in a dramatic second-round vote, overcoming a shocking first-round defeat earlier in the day. With 325 votes in his favor, Merz surpassed the required 316 majority, averting a constitutional crisis. His unexpected first-round loss, which marked the first time in postwar history a chancellor candidate failed to win, had sent shockwaves through German politics. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has expressed outrage at Merz’s victory, demanding his resignation and calling for fresh elections.

In a stunning and unprecedented setback, Germany's conservative leader Friedrich Merz has failed to secure the majority needed to become chancellor in the first round of parliamentary voting — missing by just six votes. The defeat marks the first time since World War II that a chancellor candidate has fallen short on the initial ballot. As political uncertainty grips Berlin, coalition talks intensify and fresh elections loom as a possibility. The failed bid comes amid economic stagnation, the far-right AfD’s rise, and global pressure on Germany’s next leader.
