Polish opposition party chooses historian Karol Nawrocki as presidential candidate
The decision caps a weekend during which the country's two largest parties announced their candidates for an election that will decide the successor to incumbent President Andrzej Duda, whose second and final term ends in August 2025.
U.S. President Donald Trump hailed the election of Karol Nawrocki as Poland's Next President. Trump who had publicly endorsed Nawrocki and met him before the election, celebrated the win, calling him a key ally. Trump claimed the victory "shocked all in Europe." Nawrocki's campaign echoed Trump’s rhetoric—promising to restore “normality,” take a tougher stance on Ukrainian refugees, and deepen U.S.-Poland ties. U.S. Homeland Security Chief Kristi Noem also backed Nawrocki, signaling potential military cooperation expansion.

Karol Nawrocki has been elected President of Poland after a narrow second-round win over liberal, pro-EU rival Rafal Trzaskowski. A conservative nationalist and EU skeptic, Nawrocki’s victory signals a deepening ideological rift in Polish politics and a blow to pro-European Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Nawrocki holds strong veto power, potentially blocking Tusk’s progressive reforms on EU alignment and abortion rights. His presidency, rooted in historical revisionism, may shift Poland further from Brussels—and reshape its national identity in the process.

In a high-stakes overnight assault, Russia unleashed a devastating missile and drone barrage on Ukraine. The attack featured Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic missiles—some of Moscow’s most advanced and costly weapons—reportedly targeting key defense industry facilities and airbases, particularly in the Ivano-Frankivsk region where combat aircraft were said to be stationed. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed all intended targets were successfully hit. However, Ukraine countered with reports of Patriot missile systems intercepting several incoming threats, though conflicting claims persist.
The strikes also rattled Poland, which scrambled aircraft in response. With each Kinzhal missile costing nearly $10 million, the assault underscores Russia’s intent to Cripple Ukraine’s air capabilities and destroy Western-supplied equipment. But with growing doubts about the Kinzhal's maneuverability and Ukraine’s increasing interception rates, the missile’s “hypersonic” reputation faces scrutiny. Regional tensions are now on edge as both sides escalate their battle for air superiority.
