If Russia fails to reach a peace deal with Ukraine by August 8, Trump says sweeping secondary tariffs will hit Russian oil and gas exports — and also target countries like India and China that continue to trade with Moscow.
Witkoff, who controversially met President Putin in April, drew criticism for echoing Kremlin narratives and using Russian translators during their talks. Despite his original role as Middle East envoy, Witkoff now appears to be Trump’s unofficial channel to Putin.
