Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may press criminal charges against former military chief Valery Zaluzhny if he challenges him for the presidency in the upcoming election.
Despite the ongoing conflict with Russia, Zelensky plans to run for re-election, capitalizing on his current 52% approval rating.
Zaluzhny, currently Ukraine's ambassador to the UK and considered Zelensky's main rival, has not revealed any political ambitions.
However, sources suggest Zelensky’s administration has offered Zaluzhny a prominent role in his party if he refrains from running.
If Zaluzhny enters the race, he could face investigations, including one related to the fall of Kherson to Russian forces in 2022.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has begun a high-stakes three-day visit to North Korea, underscoring deepening military ties between Moscow and Pyongyang amid the Ukraine war. Lavrov praised the “invincible brotherhood” between the nations during talks with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui in Wonsan. Notably, North Korea had deployed troops to aid Russian forces in repelling Ukraine’s invasion of the Kursk region in 2024.
Lavrov specifically commended the sacrifices of the Korean People’s Army in retaking Sudzha and surrounding villages from what he called “Ukrainian Nazis.” With Kyiv’s offensive now crushed, North Korea is sending more troops for reconstruction efforts in Kursk. Lavrov’s visit signals Russia’s growing pivot towards pariah states as it faces Western isolation. Shoigu confirmed 6,000 North Korean troops would aid with demining and engineering.

The United States has confirmed it is sending another Patriot air defense system to Ukraine to help the war-torn nation counter Russia's escalating aerial assaults. This decision comes as former President Donald Trump issued a strong statement, bashing Russian President Vladimir Putin for his aggressive military strategy. Russia has confirmed the burial of Colonel Sergei Ilyin, commander of the 155th Marine Brigade, days after reports emerged of a Ukrainian HIMARS strike that allegedly killed him along with 21 others at a command post in Kursk Oblast. On July 6, Russian forces launched a calculated drone strike on a military enlistment and recruitment office in Kremenchuk, located in Ukraine's Poltava region.
