A historic confrontation is unfolding in Washington as President Donald Trump meets Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, joined by key European leaders including Macron, Merz, Meloni, Starmer, von der Leyen, Stubb, and NATO’s Mark Rutte. This comes after Trump’s Alaska summit with Putin, where he backed a plan for Ukraine to cede Crimea and parts of Donbas, abandon NATO, and accept neutrality. Europe and Kyiv fiercely reject this “surrender deal,” warning it rewards Russian aggression and threatens NATO itself. Trump’s transactional “America First” diplomacy—focused on quick wins and cutting U.S. military spending—clashes directly with Europe’s push for long-term security and continued military aid. As Russia intensifies strikes, Europe views concessions as catastrophic. Tensions inside the White House are boiling: will this meeting end in compromise, or spark a full-scale rift between America and Europe that could reshape global order?
