Cunliffe: Water companies acted against public interest
The chair of the Independent Water Commission accuses some water companies of acting in their own private interest rather than that of the public.
Speaking at the London Water and Steam Museum where the commission has unveiled 88 recommendations to reform the water industry, Sir Jon Cunliffe said this ‘must be prevented in future’.

The system for regulating water companies should be overhauled and replaced with one body for England and one body for Wales, a landmark review of the sector has advised. The much-anticipated report from the Independent Water Commission, led by former Bank of England deputy governor Sir Jon Cunliffe, outlines 88 recommendations to the UK and Welsh governments. Environment Secretary Steve Reed says the water regulator Ofwat has “clearly failed everybody,” citing record pollution levels and rising bills. The government has announced a public inquiry into the Battle of Orgreave - one of the worst days of violence during the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike. Campaigners have long fought for an investigation into South Yorkshire Police’s actions during and after the clashes at the Orgreave Coking Plant in June 1984.
