U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed that his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, may visit Russia on August 6 or 7 â just one or two days before the ceasefire deadline he has set for Moscow. If Russia fails to reach a peace deal with Ukraine by August 8, Trump says sweeping secondary tariffs will hit Russian oil and gas exports â and also target countries like India and China that continue to trade with Moscow.
Witkoff, who controversially met President Putin in April, drew criticism for echoing Kremlin narratives and using Russian translators during their talks. Despite his original role as Middle East envoy, Witkoff now appears to be Trumpâs unofficial channel to Putin. The pressure is mounting: Trump says sanctions are ready, but also admitted Russia is âpretty good at avoiding them.â A critical moment is approaching, with diplomatic brinkmanship and global trade consequences at stake.
