SharePoint is a web application by Microsoft that is primarily used for building an intranet and manage and share files. Launched in 2001, it was initially bundled with Windows Server as Windows SharePoint Server, then renamed to Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, and then finally renamed to SharePoint. It can be used on premise or as a Microsoft 365 hosted service.
