Palestinian militants have fired projectiles at Israeli communities around Gaza for more than seven months, but have not fired longer-range rockets in months.
Israel targeted a Gaza school, claiming it contained Hamas fighters, killing 27 civilians seeking shelter, which Hamas denied. Hamas leader Haniyeh rejected the U.S. ceasefire proposal, demanding a permanent Israeli withdrawal. Despite U.S. efforts, truce attempts failed as Hamas insists on a lasting deal while Israel wants only temporary pauses until defeating Hamas. The eight-month war erupted after a Hamas attack killed 1,200 Israelis.
