24 states including Maharashtra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal have more than 15% positivity rate for COVID-19 in their daily infections, informed Union Health Ministry. "Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Haryana and Bihar have a high caseload," said Arti Ahuja, Additional Secretary (Health) while addressing a press conference in Delhi.
As the number of COVID cases is increasing in Bihar, state Health Minister Mangal Pandey on May 06 said the state government has now given the power to District Magistrate and medical colleges' superintendent to appoint doctors, nurses and paramedical staff for 3 months during this COVID period. "As cases are rising in the state we need more manpower to increase beds in hospitals. District Magistrate and medical colleges' superintendents can now appoint doctors, nurses and paramedical staff for 3 months during this COVID period," Pandey told ANI.

During her speech at West Bengal Assembly on May 08, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded universal vaccine program across the country. She said, "Rs 30,000 crores is nothing for the central government...There should be a universal vaccine program for all throughout the country." It was her first speech after taking oath as West Bengal CM for the 3rd consecutive time. She also questioned Centre's move to send 4-member MHA team amid post-poll violence reports. She said, "Why is there so much discrimination with Bengal? They sent the central team within 24 hours of oath-taking. Actually, they (BJP) are not ready to accept the public mandate. The voting finally, began at 'pink' polling booth at Raiganj Coronation High School in Uttar Dinajpur on April 22 as it got delayed due to some technical issue. People queued up to exercise their right since 7 am. BJP candidate from Raiganj, Krishna Kalyani also cast his vote at 'pink' polling booth.While speaking to ANI, Krishna Kalyani said, "Voting began a little late. It's a festival of democracy and everyone is participating. You can see the queues, it shows that this time voting will be for change, development." Polling began at 7 am for 43 seats in the sixth phase of assembly election in West Bengal. Voting began amid a surge in Covid-19 cases with the state reporting record infections. Long queues were seen outside most of the polling booths even before the voting began. Voting, which will continue till 6.30 pm, is being held in 14,480 polling stations. Elections are being held in North 24 Parganas, Nadia, Uttar Dinajpur, Purba Bardhaman. Over 1.03 crore voters will decide the political fate of 306 candidates in this phase. Around 1,071 companies of central forces deployed to ensure free and fair voting. Elections to the 294-member West Bengal assembly are being held in eight phases. Votes will be counted on May 2 with the last phase scheduled to be held on April 29. West Bengal has been reporting a record number of Covid cases over the past few days. The state breached the 10,000-mark of daily Covid infections on Wednesday. Bengal registered its highest single-day spike of 10,784 fresh cases with 58 deaths.
