West Bengal assembly passes resolution by overwhelming majority to observe Bengali new year as State Day

The West Bengal assembly has passed a resolution to observe 'Poila Baisakh' or Bengali New Year as the State Day. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee explained that the decision to observe the Bengali New Year was not dependent on approval from the governor. The resolution also proposed that Rabindranath Tagore's 'Banglar Mati, Banglar Jol' be the state song.
