Friday, 20 October 2023 India's first semi-high speed regional rail service, originally called Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), has been renamed Namo Bharat. The renaming comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's inauguration of the service on Friday. The move follows the renaming of the country's first semi-high speed train as Vande Bharat and the renovation of 1,275 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Stations program. The Namo Bharat trains will begin operating on a 17-km stretch between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot in Ghaziabad on Saturday.
