Despite consumer court rulings, carry bags still carrying price tag

IndiaTimes Wednesday, 25 October 2023
Consumer courts in India have been fining companies for charging customers for carry bags. Last month, Reliance Trends was directed to pay Rs 3,000 for charging a customer Rs 7 for a carry bag, while Ikea was fined Rs 3,000 for charging Rs 20 for a carry bag. Despite these court orders, the practice of charging for carry bags remains widespread. Lawyers argue that this practice is unfair and illegal, and consumers have the right to complain under the Consumer Protection Act. However, disposal of such cases can take up to four years, leading to a lack of credible deterrence.
