Metro cess on property registrations in 4 Maharashtra cities hits Rs 3,600 crore

IndiaTimes Wednesday, 25 October 2023
The state of Maharashtra has generated revenue of Rs 3,597 crore from Metro cess, an additional 1% stamp duty on property registration, since its introduction in February 2019. The cess was discontinued in March 2020 due to the financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic but was reintroduced in April 2022. The duty increase resulted in an additional burden of approximately Rs 50,000 for property buyers. The withdrawal of the cess is likely only if there is a decline in property sales.
