Under the radar: Farm fires up in UP, Rajasthan, MP

IndiaTimes Tuesday, 7 November 2023
Punjab has contributed the most to farm fire events, surpassing other neighboring states combined. However, Punjab and Haryana have reported a 40% decline in stubble burning incidents compared to last year. Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, on the other hand, have seen an increase in such incidents. The efforts to tackle the problem are primarily focused on Punjab and Haryana. The number of farm fires remains high in Delhi-NCR, accounting for 26% of overall air pollution. Measures such as subsidies for machinery and incentives for crop diversification have contributed to the reduction in incidents. The availability of crop residue management machines in Punjab and Haryana is currently sufficient. However, the situation may change during the peak paddy harvest period.
