These dacoits in Jhansi will rob you of your fear

IndiaTimes Thursday, 9 November 2023
Residents of Erach town in Jhansi, India, continue an age-old tradition during the Ravan Vadh Mela fair by dressing up as dacoits and seeking donations from passersby. The tradition, started by bandits in the region, symbolizes the slaying of one's internal demon. The objective is to show that evil must bow down to good. The dacoits, armed with toy guns, do not harass or force anyone to pay. The tradition is rooted in the folklore of Maa Kaali, who killed Mahiravan, the brother of Ravana.
