Those in juvenile homes often end up in prison later in life, says study

IndiaTimes Sunday, 19 November 2023
A study by Madras University has found that many individuals who were previously placed in juvenile homes for committing crimes end up in prison later in life. The study interviewed 173 prisoners in Puzhal prison and found that 152 of them had been to prison multiple times. Poverty, desire for a better lifestyle, and addiction to intoxicants were cited as major reasons for criminal activity. The study suggests alternative measures such as restorative justice programs to lower the chances of reoffending. Legal experts believe changes to the Juvenile Justice Act would be necessary to implement these measures.
