'HIV has hit 6k families in Mumbai, 29% couples default on medicines'

IndiaTimes Friday, 1 December 2023
Mumbai's HIV/AIDS control body conducted a unique exercise to determine the count of families impacted by the endemic. The result unveiled a significant revelation - as many as 6,000 families are affected by the virus in the city, with 29% of couples failing to adhere to treatment. The Mumbai Districts Aids Control Society (MDACS) called this discovery significant and plans to shift to a family-focused strategy. They will offer integrated testing, synchronised dates for pill collection, and joint counselling. The assessment showed that 74% of couples who defaulted on treatment did so within six months, highlighting the crucial role of family in adherence. The Maharashtra State Aids Control Society (MSACS) is considering involving the police to ensure treatment adherence among existing patients and reduce new infections.
