Bihar: Garland around neck, gun to head...and he's married

IndiaTimes Friday, 1 December 2023
Bihar's niche market for kidnapped grooms, known as 'Pakadua Vivah', is driven by the scarcity of educated, employed young men and high dowry demands. The recent abduction of Gautam Kumar, a newly appointed teacher in Bihar, highlights the prevalence of forced marriages. Despite Kumar's rescue and the arrest of one perpetrator, the practice continues due to the power dynamics and fear within the bride's family. The use of guns and gangs is merely a symptom of the underlying issue. Arrests alone are unlikely to deter future abductions.
