41% of Delhi overexploiting groundwater, says report

Delhi has been overexploiting groundwater due to reduction in rainfall, as per the Central Ground Water Board. The annual groundwater recharge decreased from 0.41bcm to 0.38bcm, while the extractable groundwater resource decreased from 0.37bcm to 0.34bcm. Tubewells are the major source of extraction, accounting for over 41% of overexploited areas. The report categorizes 13 units as overexploited, 12 units as critical, four units as semi-critical, and five units as safe. Some areas show improvement, but Hauz Khas and Dwarka remain critical.
