Rape survivor seeks nod to abort, attempts suicide in court

A pregnant 25-year-old rape survivor from Budaun district in UP, seeking permission to abort her four-month-old foetus, consumed poison in the court compound in Roorkee. She was taken to a local hospital and later referred to AIIMS-Rishikesh. The main accused, Mohammad Tayyab, was apprehended on November 11. The survivor faced pressure from her landlord and the accused's family to withdraw the case. She had filed a police complaint against Tayyab after discovering her pregnancy. State Women's Commission chairperson has ordered a thorough investigation.
