Cyclone-scarred islands see healthy harvest, hope after years

IndiaTimes Sunday, 17 December 2023
The islands of Mousuni and Ghoramara in the Sundarbans, Bengal, have successfully cultivated their first full paddy crop in years despite the challenges caused by devastating cyclones like Aila, Bulbul, Amphan, and Yaas. The islands experienced a sharp increase in soil salinity due to repeated swamping by seawater. However, this year, farmers managed to reduce soil salinity through techniques such as increasing the height of boundary walls, ploughing, proper drainage, seed-priming, and using salt-tolerant seed varieties.
