Goa: On eve of Liberation Day, Naiks relive bombing of Banastarim bridge

IndiaTimes Tuesday, 19 December 2023
This article discusses the memories of Jaywant Naik, an 80-year-old man, on Liberation Day. He recalls the bombing of the Banastarim bridge on December 18, 1961. The bridge was destroyed by a gelatine-loaded truck. Naik's mud houses near the bridge were razed to the ground due to the powerful explosion. The Indian government contacted a Mumbai-based firm, Richardson Crudas, for quick repairs. The Naik family and other villagers were evacuated to Adcolna for safety. The transition from Portuguese rule to Indian administration went smoothly.
