IMD warning bit late, rainfall higher than forecast: Stalin

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned the state government of heavy rain in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts, which received an unprecedented amount of rain. Chief Minister M K Stalin met with PM Narendra Modi and requested immediate relief funds for Chennai and three adjoining districts. He also urged the Centre to declare the calamities national disasters and release funds for livelihood assistance and temporary restoration. The CM postponed his inspection of Tuticorin district as an inter-ministerial team is scheduled to visit. The IMD forecasted extreme heavy rainfall, and the state government deployed resources for rescue efforts. The IAF and navy helicopters dropped food packets and rescued 16,680 people. Warnings were issued to 1.14 crore people through a common alert protocol system.
