Gut microbes can affect COVID vaccine response, study finds

IndiaTimes Friday, 5 January 2024
Certain bacteria in the gut can enhance or weaken the immune response to the mRNA Covid vaccine, according to a study. The gut microbiome, which consists of microorganisms in the digestive tract, plays a crucial role in digestion, metabolism, and immunity. Researchers analyzed stool samples from individuals before their vaccine dose and found that the initial composition of the gut microbiome predicted the vaccine response. Specific bacteria were associated with better or worse vaccine responses, and the study suggests that microbiota-focused treatments could enhance vaccine efficacy.
