Unlike other 2 new criminal laws, one on investigation and trial may see staggered rollout

IndiaTimes Sunday, 14 January 2024
While the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) will kick in uniformly across the country, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) β€” which lays down the updated procedures and time-limits for criminal investigation and trial and also requires full digital integration of all arms of the criminal justice system including courts β€” may see a staggered rollout, with the police commissionerates being the first to implement the fully-updated criminal justice system. There are 74 police commissionerates, as per the 2022 edition of β€˜Data on Police Organisations report’ compiled by the Bureau of Police Research and Development.
