Pune GBS outbreak could be one of the largest in world
Saturday, 1 February 2025 In Pune, 18 out of 140 Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) patients are on ventilator support, hinting at one of the largest outbreaks recorded. This autoimmune condition has shown increased incidents linked to the microbe Campylobacter jejuni, similar to past outbreaks in Peru, necessitating epidemiological study to understand these links.
The Drowning Prevention Awareness campaign, launched on World Drowning Prevention Day (25 July), is a heartfelt initiative by the Hemant Bala Advaitha (HBA) Foundation. Sparked by the tragic loss of 18-year-old music prodigy Advaitha Verma—who drowned in Pawna Lake in India's Pune, in June 2024—his parents Sudesh Verma and Renu Kaul Verma turned their grief into purpose. This Drowning Prevention Awareness campaign aims to educate, inform and prevent such avoidable tragedies nationwide. Backed by the WHO and inspired by the UN resolution of 2021, the Drowning Prevention Awareness movement highlights the urgent need for safety, education and community action.
