Justice has finally been achieved, say kin of Irish woman raped, murdered in Goa in 2017
Friday, 14 February 2025 Vikat Bhagat was convicted for the 2017 rape and murder of an Irish woman, luring her to a secluded area in Canacona. Evidence, including his injuries and the victim's blood on his belongings, supported the case. Witnesses faced threats, yet their testimonies proved crucial in court.
A tragic stampede at the Lairai Devi temple in Goa’s Shirgao village claimed six lives and left around 80 injured during the fire-walking ritual of the Lairai Zatra festival. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed the fatalities and pledged full support to victims' families. Five of the injured are critical and on ventilator support, according to state health minister Vishwajit Rane. Prime Minister Modi extended condolences. The Lairai Zatra is one of Goa's most important Hindu festivals. Deadly stampedes are a recurring risk at large religious gatherings in India.
