Deported by US to Panama, 12 illegal migrants reach India
Sunday, 23 February 2025 A group of 12 undocumented Indian immigrants deported from the US to Panama reached Delhi, facilitated by the International Organisation for Migration. This comes after the deportation of 332 others to Amritsar earlier this month. Cases have been registered against travel agents responsible for illegal facilitation.
India has responded after a viral video showed US deportees, including Indians, crying for help from a hotel in Panama where they are being held. The UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed at least 68 deaths and 74 people still missing after the vessel sank near the southern Yemeni province of Abyan. Bodies of 54 migrants washed ashore in Khanfar district, while 14 others were recovered and transported to a hospital in Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province. This is the latest in a grim pattern of fatal shipwrecks involving African migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in pursuit of economic opportunities. Hundreds have perished in recent months on the perilous route through the Gulf of Aden. The IOM has called for urgent international support and greater protection for vulnerable migrants on this deadly corridor.
