Drug cartel's hawala cash trail ends in washing machine in Goa
Saturday, 7 June 2025 () Telangana Anti Narcotics Bureau busted an inter-state hawala racket linked to international drug cartels, seizing ₹50 lakh from a Goa flat, ready to be laundered to Nigeria. The investigation revealed that the key accused, Uttam Singh, laundered ₹2.1 crore of drug money in a week through informal channels, with funds ultimately destined for Nigeria.
A tragic stampede at the Lairai Devi temple in Goa’s Shirgao village claimed six lives and left around 80 injured during the fire-walking ritual of the Lairai Zatra festival. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed the fatalities and pledged full support to victims' families. Five of the injured are critical and on ventilator support, according to state health minister Vishwajit Rane. Prime Minister Modi extended condolences. The Lairai Zatra is one of Goa's most important Hindu festivals. Deadly stampedes are a recurring risk at large religious gatherings in India.

At least 175 people have died and over 3,000 displaced after catastrophic floods submerged Mokwa, a major market town in Nigeria's Niger State. Triggered by predawn rains, the floods affected 500 households, leaving many rooftops submerged and people waist-deep in water. President Bola Tinubu has activated emergency response operations, vowing no victim will be abandoned. As climate change worsens Nigeria’s weather extremes, devastated residents mourn their dead and lost harvests. The town, a crucial agricultural hub, is now struggling to cope with trauma, loss, and rising humanitarian needs.
