AI171 preliminary probe: 2018 report flagged fuel switch concern, but said it wasn't 'unsafe'
Saturday, 12 July 2025 A preliminary report on the Air India flight 171 crash in Ahmedabad highlights a potential fuel control switch malfunction. The report references a serviceability bulletin regarding the Boeing-787's fuel control switch, indicating a possible issue with the locking feature. Despite the FAA's advisory, Air India did not conduct the suggested inspections.

An Air India incident was narrowly averted at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on July 21, 2025, when flight AI 2744, an Airbus A320 from Kochi, veered off the runway during heavy rainfall. The Air India incident occurred at 9:27 AM, as the aircraft briefly entered a muddy area near the runway but returned to the tarmac without getting stuck. While all passengers and crew were safe, three tyres burst and possible engine damage was reported. The Air India incident prompted activation of emergency response teams, and operations have shifted to the secondary runway as minor damage was sustained on the primary strip.

Fresh controversy has erupted over the fatal Air India crash in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad last month. A Wall Street Journal report claims a cockpit recording reveals the captain cut off the aircraft’s fuel midair, moments after takeoff. The first officer, reportedly panicked, questioned the captain’s move, as per the leaked cockpit transcript. Both pilots, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First Officer Clive Kunder, were killed along with 240 others onboard and 19 on the ground—only one person survived. While the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's (AIIB) preliminary report confirms both fuel switches were turned off within a second, it doesn’t state whether the action was accidental or deliberate. India’s Civil Aviation Minister urged restraint, saying no conclusions should be drawn yet. The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has strongly condemned the US media report, calling it speculative and harmful. Meanwhile, Air India completed checks on the Fuel Control Switches in all Boeing 787s with no issues found.
