The Shakti Peethas are believed to be places where body parts of Goddess Sati fell after she immolated herself in the Daksha-yajna. Lord Shiva, in his grief, carried her corpse in a cosmic Tandava dance until Lord Vishnu stopped him and cleaved the body into 51 pieces. Legends say that each body part landed in different areas all over India and became sacred shrines where Goddess Satiβs energy and Shakti still resonate today.
