The world's top golfer was arrested in Louisville, Kentucky, on May 17, NBC News reports. .
He was detained prior to the
second round of the championship.

Scheffler was charged with "second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from officers directing traffic," NBC News reports.
The 27-year-old golfer was later released
and returned to Valhalla Golf Club.

Scheffler says that the incident was the result of a misunderstanding following a fatal accident at the club earlier that day.
Round 2 was first delayed after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus at 5 a.m.
