European diplomacy steps up calls for Gaza cease-fire

Israel faces growing international pressure from European allies and the US defence secretary to declare a cease-fire and transition to a more targeted strategy against Hamas. Concerns over civilian casualties and mass displacement have led Western allies to call for discrimination in targeting Hamas leaders and operatives. The cease-fire should be sustainable and allow progress toward the release of hostages, delivery of humanitarian aid, and a political solution. Domestic calls are also increasing for renewed negotiations with Hamas after the accidental killing of three Israeli hostages.
