Even well-off Chinese say they can't afford marriage amid slowing economy

IndiaTimes Tuesday, 16 January 2024
As China's economy slows down, more and more people are choosing to remain single due to poor job prospects, high youth unemployment, and low consumer confidence. This trend has resulted in a significant decrease in marriage registrations in 2022. The reluctance to marry is a cause for concern for policymakers as it contributes to a decline in birth rates and an ageing population. In the past, China was known for its high population, and marriage rates were closely linked to birth rates as unmarried mothers often faced difficulties in accessing child-rearing benefits.
