Year-round school is expanding in la crosse.
A second elementary school is moving to the 45-15 school calendar.
News 8's jordan fremstad spoke to school officials to find out how the new school year will benefit students.
Lisa researchers have been studying what is known as the summer slide since 1906... according to the brookings institution.
Summer slide is when students forget some of what they have learned from the privious school year.
Most schools have continued their traditional calendars... but northside elementary is becoming school number two in la crosse to change its calendar.
It's an effort to keep students from losing the knowledge they learn.
(nats silence) it's a scene you would expect within the four walls of a school in july.
But the bell at northside elementary will ring a little early this year.
"we start school on thursday."

It's the best, hardest, most rewarding thing ever."
Has been enriching young minds for seven years.
"you love them, you teach them.
You try to help them grow and be the best people they can be."
And her third graders love coming to class.
"very...they love this year."
It's not easy giving up a little summer vacation...but the teachers say the intentions behind it are worth the added time investment.
"we wanted to address summer learning loss.
We know that in september if kids have been away from their books for a few months they tend to regress."
The brookings institute highlighted several authors who have been studying what is known as the summer slide...their research showed that on average students can lose a month's worth of school learning during the summer.
When the students come back in the fall...more time and energy has to be spent teaching what was all ready tought.
"they forget their routines and how to do school."
Northside elementary principal laura huber says most of the parents agreed with this new calendar.
"we learned that about 80-85 percent of the parents were interested in this."
As students continue to learn....teacher s are learning...how to keep the knowledge they teach...inside the citizens of tomorrow.
"just to have more consistancy with them.
I am really looking forward to that.
I think being in school during the summer brings opportunities they would not normally get to do during the school year."
Northside elementary joins hamilton early learning center as the only two schools in la crosse county to offer this school year format.

When you say year round you think it means no days off.
However it's 45 days on and 15 days off.
And that runs from now until june.
Then they get a six week break.
There is a little time to enjoy summer and get more time in the classroom.
